Turkey is a unique and fascinating country, with vast and varied landscapes and some of the world’s most important ancient monuments. The country is special in the sense that it straddles two continents, Europe and Asia, and combines the best of both worlds. Turkey has been the birthplace of many great civilizations and empires, all of which have left their mark on the art and architecture of the country, from ancient Greek and Roman ruins to Byzantine churches and Ottoman mosques. In Turkey you will find yourself surrounded by over ten thousand years of history, incredible architecture, lively nightlife, and delicious local food and drink.
The big cities of Turkey throb and pulse with night-time partygoers in stylish jazz bars and huge glittering dance clubs. Older holiday makers enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of happy-hour cocktail bars and sports pubs. Perhaps you will see a traditional Turkish belly-dance show, an exciting and elegant art form that goes back centuries.
One of the quintessential experiences of Turkey is going shopping in a colourful and bustling outdoor market. Here, you can use your bargaining skills to negotiate great prices on all sorts of products such as locally made handicrafts, handbags, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, rugs, musical instruments, and copies of designer-brand shoes, wristwatches and handbags.
Another tradition is to relax and wash your cares away in the steamy calm of a Turkish bath, also known as a Hammam. You begin by resting in a warm room headed by a flow of hot, dry air, causing you to perspire and release toxins through your pores, which is very good for your skin. You can then move to an even hotter room, before refreshing your skin with a splash of cool water. Then, after a full-body wash and a stress-releasing massage, you retire to the cooling room for more rest and relaxation.
