Villas in Spain are enjoying an upsurge in popularity
Date: 2 Sep 2010Every year families go through the same dilemma. Where shall we go on holiday?
In the last two years many Brits opted for a staycation as a way of cutting back on expenses after the economic slowdown. The concept is not new. For the past five years, the English Tourist Board has been pushing us with the delights of our own country including marvellously diverse coastlines: Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Yorkshire and Cumbria.
Even the Prime Minister has been promoting the concept, with David Cameron enjoying a family getaway in Cornwall - encouraging others to follow his lead.
But British tourists' flirtations with the staycation seem to be a thing of the past, as statistics show villas in Spain are enjoying an upsurge in popularity.
It appears that both the wet summer that Britain experienced in 2009 & 2010 plus the strengthening of the pound inspired the beginnings of a return to sun-kissed villas in Spain, according to official figures from Spain’s National Statistics Institute reveal.
Overnight stays by foreign tourists in Spain rose by 11% in July this year, compared to the same time in 2009.
