Cartagena, 20 minutes from La Manga, the first settlement founded in the natural harbour of Cartagena was constructed in 223 BC by the Carthaginians, who called it Quart Hadas (New City). After conquering the city in 209 BC the Romans called it Carthago Nova (New Carthage) Although the city declined in importance in the middle ages, its prestige increased in the 18th century when it became a major naval base. Now a busy city with a wealth of museums, restaurants and of course great shops.Lorca sits in the south-west of the region of Murcia and is a town of a variety of contrasts. The town blends it's historical heritage with modern life. Lorca is also an important commercial centre and is probably the most important tourist centre in the region. It has mountains to a height of 1.500m in the north-west and an 8km coastline. The surrounding area is covered with vineyards.
Mar Menor, (Little Sea) is a unique area located on the east coast of Spain, within the region of Murcia just above the city of Cartegena. Few regions have the good fortune to have both a saltwater lake and a Mediterranean shore. The region of Murcia has both and the salt water lake with an area of 170sq.km is known as Mar Menor, the largest salt water lake in Europe. The water here is both warm and very safe for swimming.
Murcia, just 40 minutes from La Manga Club, is described as one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the country. The city is some 1200 years old and has many features and museums and excellent shopping. It has the highest temperatures in the region. There is a great deal of Moorish influence in the city, not least of all the impressive city walls. After the reconquest, the 20 mosques in the city were turned into churches. The Cathedral is the most highly prized building in the city. The first foundation stone was laid in 1388 by Bishop Pedrosa. It took four centuries to complete. There are so many different styles and cultures within, including 23 different chapels.
