There are plenty of ways to keep active while in the Dordogne; canoeing on the rivers is a popular sport, and one of the nicest ways to spend a day in the area is to pack a picnic, rent a couple of canoes, and glide down the Dordogne admiring the castles looming above you. Cycling and horseriding are also very popular. There are plenty of gems such as medieval buildings, for those who love history, and we recommend paying a visit to Rocamadour, Sarlat and St Emilion and other local villages.
Here are a few places (amongst many) worth visiting:
Sarlat, the medieval town, is situated in the centre of Dordogne region. It is renowned for its Saturday market, which is best in the region. It is worth seeing the town at night when it is well lit and there is a romantic feel in the area.
St Emilion, 30 km east of Bordeaux, it is one of those elegant and cozy places with cobbled streets, medieval buildings. The best way to appreciate the treasures of this village is to go on an official tour run by the tourist office, which takes you to the parts that can only be seen with a tour guide.
Rocamadour , which is about 50 km from Sarlat, is an extraordinary town, a magical place with golden beautifully built houses clinging to the side of a cliff. As you take a walk down the cliff you pass lovely little shops, which sell specialties of a region such as: Foie-gras, truffles, farm lamb and goats cheese. The place is very touristy so we recommend getting there either very early or later in the afternoon.
