SURROUNDING AREA
LISBON
Just one hour away and easy to visit for a day. Boasting springtime temperatures during the winter and pleasant summers freshened by Atlantic breezes, Lisbon offers a rich and impressively integrated diversity. The capital of Portugal since it's conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is a legendary city and still retains much of its original layout. At it's heart are wide, tree-lined avenues graced by Art Nouveau buildings, mosaic pavements and street cafes. Seen from the river, one of the city's many great view points, Lisbon is an impressionist picture of low-rise ochre and pastel punctuated by church towers and domes.
People in Lisbon love going out and the city has a variety of areas with different styles of restaurants and bars one can visit. Lisbon's bars, theatres, cabarets and discos add spice to life in the city after dark. The Fado House, where one can savour the excellent local cooking and listen to the emotional music of Lisbon, is unique.
OBIDOS
Obidos is considered to be one of the jewels of Portugal’s national heritage. It's outstanding architectural beauty is reflected as much in the winding narrow streets and elegant whitewashed buildings and balconies decorated with flowers as in the ancient churches and the magnificent Moorish castle whose high protective walls encircle the town. Conquered from the Moors in 1418, Obidos was once the favourite retreat of King Sancho I and was a wedding gift from King Diniz to Queen Isabel. Within the city walls there are some charming restaurants and shops well worth visiting.
OBIDOS LAGOON
Is one of the largest salt water lagoons with a magnificent sand bar situated between it and the sea. The protected beach and dunes make it a perfect place for swimming and boating. This is one of the most beautiful spots on the west coast and has a fragile ecosystem where diverse species are to be found.
FOZ DO ARELHO
Bordering the Obidos Lagoon is this delightful small town with many restaurants serving excellent fresh fish, mussels and cockles. The Atlantic rollers make it the perfect place for windsurfing. There is a large sandy beach with ample space for sun worshippers.
CALDAS DA RAINHA
This city is just 20 minutes from Praia d’el Rey and is famous for it's daily market where fresh food can readily be bought. The Thermal waters of Caldas are beneficial for people suffering from rheumatism, muscle-skeletal and respiratory diseases and there is a Thermal Hospital originally built in 1485, which has been partially reconstructed during the 18th and 19th centuries. Caldas da Rainha is also well known for its
gastronomy, lace making and excellent shopping.

Its importance has been recognised by the European Council, having given it the status of Bio-genetic Reserve. Protected by law since 1981, the whole of this Nature Reserve embodies a terrestrial area of nearly 80 hectares and a coast area of about 1000 hectares. An ideal area for bird watching together with a variety of flora make this Nature Reserve very special.
GASTRONOMY
From a land so fertile and generous, bathed by a sea so bountiful, one could not expect less than an abundant variety of food.
