South Coast Beaches...
Dover Beach: This busy beach features plenty of food and drink outlets as well as local bars and restaurants in close proximity. A nice beach facility features cute souvenir stands and a children's playground.
Sandy Beach: This fabulous beach is a favorite "liming" spot for many on the south coast, with the Crystal Waters Beach Bar providing the perfect atmosphere for getting into the Bajan way of life.
Accra Beach: A wonderful swimming location and one of the longest and widest stretches of beach on the south coast of Barbados. Accra is suitable for the entire family with many beach chairs and umbrellas available and good body surfing.
St. Lawrence Little Bay: This is a picturesque spot where fishing boats head out in the early mornings. It's not a true swimming bay and there's not a large beach to set up camp for a day.
Miami Beach: This lifeguarded beach near Oistin's, is the perfect beach to take children, as there are two bays for swimming - the below side being a calm lagoon for young children.
Silver Sands: Off the beaten path, this beach is the eastern point of what is considered the South Coast of Barbados and provides the perfect conditions for boogie boarders and surfers.
Maxwell Beach: East of St. Lawrence Gap, Maxwell has jet-skiing, Hobie Cats, and a large expanse of pretty, white beach.
Oistins, in the parish of Christ Church on the south coast, is a major fishing community in Barbados with a modern fishing market and it is the centre of activity on weekend nights, all year round.
The food at Oistin's Fish Fry can't be missed - excellent fresh fish, lobster and chicken all served in an extremely informal and rustic setting, cooked on the spot in front of you. Food is usually available from about 7:00 pm but if you go early you can walk on the pier and perhaps see a great sunset. Collect your fish scraps from the vendors in the fish market and feed the turtles.
Whilst the old-timers are playing dominoes both locals and tourists mix together drinking rum and dancing to calypso music, including the current Crop Over hits. Some nights there's a live band playing.
If you are looking for souvenirs to take home there are also plenty of art and craft items on sale, including jewellery, pottery, ceramics, leather craft, wood carvings, straw craft, clothing and accessories, and original paintings and prints.
Oistin's Fish Fry is an inexpensive and highly memorable experience on the island and a great place to spend an informal evening. Lots of parents bring their children.
